How to hire a tuk-tuk driver in Siem Reap

April 6, 2006. Siem Reap, Cambodia.

  1. Take an authorized motorbike taxi from airport to guesthouse
  2. Receive sales pressure from motorbike driver to hire him as a guide. "$40 for 3 days...We wait all day for customer like you...we are licensed by tourism board...you might lose things if you leave them in not-licensed tuk-tuks...you will not find cheaper...we give you good price..."
  3. Insist that you need to look around to compare prices. Tell him to meet you back at the guesthouse in the evening.
  4. Walk around the neighborhood and ask for quotes.
  5. Walk out of the neighborhood. Find a tuk-tuk driver who is banned from parking by the guesthouse because he is willing to undercut other drivers' quotes.
  6. Hire him for $30 for 3 days.
  7. Return to guesthouse to give response to original driver. Get yelled at by him. Be fearful the rest of the night that he will come by your room and sabotage your stuff because he knows where you live.
